Product Description

This beautiful commemorative coin set represents the start of WWII for the United States, a submarine launching on the first anniversary of the attack, and finally, the surrender of the Empire of Japan.

The USS Arizona BB-39, a beautiful 1.75-inch brass coin, represents the beginning. This unique coin features the USS Arizona BB-39 on the front of the coin. The back of the coin features the "Last Torpedo" by artist Tom Freeman. This image shows the USS Oklahoma starting to capsize after Lt Jinichi Goto's second torpedo struck her. Moored outboard alongside the Oklahoma is the USS Maryland BB-46. Directly behind them are the USS Tennessee BB-43 and USS West Virginia BB-48, the first battleship to be hit. The fireball is the moment the USS Arizona BB-39's forward powder magazines exploded after being hit by an 800-kilogram bomb.

The middle is represented by a gorgeous 1.5-inch hand-painted brass coin featuring the USS Bowfin SS-287. Nicknamed the "Pearl Harbor Avenger," the Bowfin was launched on December 7, 1942, on the Pearl Harbor attack's first anniversary. Though the United States had long since engaged Japan in conflict since the surprise assault, the USS Bowfin launch marked a momentous occasion. It proved that "despite the tragedy from which the country was still recovering," it would emerge stronger than ever.

The ending features another highly detailed, hand-painted 1.5-inch brass coin for the USS Missouri BB-63, the world's last active battleship. The ship assigned to the Pacific Theater during World War II participated in the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and shelled the Japanese home islands. Her quarterdeck was the site of the surrender of the Empire of Japan, which ended World War II, and has been called the most historic battleship in the world.
