USS Thomas Edison Challenge Coin

The USS Thomas A. Edison was named after Thomas Alva Edison, one of America’s most successful inventors and businessmen. He developed several devices changed life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. He was called "The Wizard of Menlo Park" and was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of mass production and large-scale teamwork to the process of invention.

Commissioned on 10 March 1962, the USS Thomas A. Edison had a displacement of approximately 7,900 tons submerged and stretches some 410 feet in length. Armed with torpedoes and ballistic missiles, she was ideally suited to the deterrence and her evolving mission of enforcing the Cold War peace.
