This set consists of the four 1.5-inch brass hand-painted coins that made up the Skate Class, the first production run of nuclear-powered subs in the United States. They were an evolution of the Tang Class in everything but their propulsion plants, based on the experimental USS Nautilus. The four Skate class boats also re-introduced stern torpedo tubes and were among the smallest nuclear-powered attack submarines ever built. The Skate class served for several decades, decommissioning the last boat, USS Swordfish SSN 579, in 1989. The USS Skate SSN 578 was also the first submarine to surface at the North Pole, on March 17, 1959.
